Message to my Son

On September 13, 1987, I had the blessing of bringing my son, Marquis Jerome Medley, into this world. He was my only biological child and one of the greatest gifts of my life.

Although Marquis didn’t have his biological father in his life, he had his stepdad, Kevin, who was there through the good times and the bad. Kevin loves Marquis as his own and will miss his son deeply.

From the moment Marquis was born, he shared a very special relationship with my mom. He loved his grandmother dearly, and that love only grew stronger as he got older. Marquis was very protective of her and always wanted to make sure she was okay.

He always knew his grandmother was someone he could rely on. No matter what he was facing, she was there to listen, help, or simply be by his side. Their connection was truly special. She was more than his grandmother, she was someone he trusted completely and leaned on without hesitation.

Marquis had a passion for basketball. He was an exceptional player and was ranked among the Top 50 players in the state of Texas during his high school years. He truly loved the game, and watching him play made us proud.

But Marquis was so much more than an athlete.

My son had a memory like no other. He could remember things most people would forget, from small details to conversations and experiences from years before. It was just another part of what made Marquis so special.

He also had an incredible sense of humor. He could keep you laughing and had a way of bringing joy into a room. He especially loved playing pranks on people. I was one of his favorite targets. Those moments may have seemed small at the time, but they are memories I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Marquis was intelligent and inquisitive. He took great interest in discovering new things and truly valued school. He had a mind that was always eager to understand something new.

Although Marquis was an only child, he was never without family. His cousins were like siblings, and the bonds they shared were unbreakable. He was surrounded by people who loved him.

Marquis also loved to cook. He enjoyed trying different foods and flavors, but he always said nothing could ever top his momma’s cooking. That will always make me smile, because no matter how much he appreciated good food, he never stopped believing his momma’s meals were the best of all.

Then came August 16.

Everything came to a head, and my beloved son, Marquis, lost his life.

There are no words that can truly explain what it feels like for a mother to lose a child. A part of me left this world with him that day. I will carry this pain, but I will also carry his memory.

I will remember his laughter.

I will remember his jokes and his pranks.

I will remember watching him play basketball.

I will remember his incredible memory and the things he never seemed to forget.

I will remember his intelligence, his curiosity, and his love of learning.

I will remember how handsome my son was.

I will remember his love for food and cooking.

I will remember the special bond he shared with his grandmother.

And most of all, I will remember the little boy I brought into this world on September 13, 1987, and the man he became.

Marquis, you will always be my son. You will always be my baby. You will always have a special place in my heart.

I wish I could have one more conversation with you. One more laugh. One more hug. One more taste of something you cooked. One more moment of hearing you call me Momma.

But until the day we meet again, I will continue to speak your name. I will tell your story and keep your memory alive.

Rest peacefully, my son.

You were loved before you ever took your first breath. You were loved every day of your life, and you will be loved every day that I remain here.

Forever my son.

Forever my baby.

Forever in my heart.
